Charlie Bell Gets Jail for Being Drunk at DUI Hearing

It’s hard to say what his thinking was. Charlie Bell, guard for the Golden State Warriors basketball team, knew he would face a judge for a his DUI hearing. And, granted, that’s a stressful time. But drinking enough to be above the legal minimum before court? Hard to figure.

The hearing, in Flint, was for an October arrest for DUI (his second). Mr. Bell is from Flint and has been in the news for an alleged assault by his wife as well as problems with the NBA itself. As a result of this latest mistake, not only has Bell been jailed, but his team as invoked the “amnesty” clause. That’s a clause that allows them to drop a player and rescind their contract without paying a penalty.

The long and short of it is that Bell won’t be playing in the NBA any time soon.

How often have we heard just such tales from other alcoholics? Lots. Only it’s usually just a tragic story told at an AA meeting. This time, like other celebrities, the sober world gets a peek at just how crazy things get with alcoholism.

It’s probably not so surprising for those familiar with the disease. The money and fame doesn’t protect anyone from the harm alcohol can cause. And the stupidity of showing up in court drunk? Not outside the pale when alcohol becomes a daily habit. Drunks tell themselves that no one will notice all the time. In fact, Bell may have been largely functional with a BAC of 0.09. Unfortunately for him, the terms of his bond stated no alcohol – and then the judge had him tested.

He’s worth saving. Not because he’s a gifted athlete ruining his life and career with alcohol, but because he’s a human being. He’s worth saving as much as any problem drinker. We can only hope that this latest crash and burn is his personal rock bottom and he gets the help he needs.
